‘What Is A Woman?’ Reaches No. 1 For Streaming Documentaries On Rotten Tomatoes

Daily Wire host Matt Walsh’s hit documentary “What is a Woman?” hit the number one spot on Rotten Tomatoes for streaming documentaries on Sunday — a year after it was released.

Under the June 2023 “Best Documentary Movies at Home” category on the movie review site, “What is a Woman?” beats out other more recently released documentaries that rounded the top five.

“Congrats to [Matt Walsh] for your well -deserved receipt of this year’s Streisand Effect Grand Prize,” DailyWire+ host Dr. Jordan B. Peterson tweeted to Walsh.

The news comes as the documentary has had a milestone week, with The Daily Wire posting it to Twitter for free — with the tweet garnering more than 160 million views. The Daily Wire initially planned to stream “What is a Woman?” on the platform for 24 hours. But Twitter labeled the documentary “hateful conduct” and restricted its visibility because of two instances of supposed “misgendering.” A few hours before its release, Twitter CEO Elon Musk insisted it had been a mistake, yet the film was saddled with restrictions when it aired. Early Friday, Twitter’s tag restricting the visibility of “What is a Woman?” was removed, allowing Twitter users to like and retweet the documentary. Musk tweeted out the film to his 140 million followers.

On Saturday, Walsh called out the media bias surrounding his documentary with a screenshot of the audience and critic review scores of the film, noting that not a single legacy media publication reviewed “What is a Woman?” — despite the documentary racking up tremendous viewership.

“The film has been seen by millions of people but still only six movie critics have dared to review it,” Walsh posted. “And none of them are from major mainstream publications.”

The tweet shows a screenshot of the film’s Rotten Tomato scores. With the general audience, more than 10,000 reviews landed the film at 86%. But there are only six reviews from critics, totaling a score of 83%.

Despite the high viewership of the film and it reaching the top spot among the most popular documentaries on Rotten Tomatoes, none of the leading critics have reviewed it, including reviewers from The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, NPR, BuzzFeed News, Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, Variety, and many more. Notably, many of those same outlets have covered the buzz and related news surrounding “What is a Woman?”
