ABC News, “This Week”:
Governor Gavin Newsom claimed during a Sunday morning interview that former President Donald Trump was “lighting democracy on fire.” He told ABC’s Jonathan Karl that he had been shocked to see democracy itself become a “partisan issue” — which he blamed on Trump.
“He’s making democracy a partisan issue. I never imagined that in my lifetime, so the consequences are profound and pronounced,” Newsom said.

Newsom admitted that he took “the threat of Trump very seriously,” but then went on to attack Trump on a more personal level, saying that he had essentially grown bored of the former president’s persona.

CBS News, “Face the Nation”:
Senator James Lankford (R-OK) weighed in on the recent defamation case involving former President Trump and E. Jean Carroll — and he told CBS host Margaret Brennan that he was not really concerned with the fact that the court had ordered Trump to pay Carroll more than $83 million in damages.
“Let the courts actually make their decisions and let the American people make their decision,” he said, adding that the ruling did not give him “pause” about the prospect of Trump returning to the White House.

CNN, “State of the Union”:
Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) told CNN anchor Dana Bash that former President Donald Trump was “rooting for chaos” in his efforts to tank the bipartisan border bill that is currently before Congress.
Murphy then turned the topic to Ukraine, complaining that the only reason border security was even being addressed at all was the fact that Republicans refused to move forward with more money for Ukraine unless Democrats were willing to address border security in the United States as well.

Bash also spoke with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) during Sunday’s broadcast of “State of the Union,” and the conversation turned to a recent campaign-trail gaffe — when former President Trump appeared to mix up Pelosi and his primary rival, former Governor Nikki Haley.
Bash gave Pelosi a boost by claiming that the point Trump had been making — that Pelosi was the one who had dropped the ball when it came to security around the Capitol on January 6th, 2021. She then further set the scene with recent comments from President Joe Biden, who mocked Trump and said that he couldn’t tell the difference between Pelosi and Haley.
Bash posed the direct question then, asking whether Pelosi believed that age and mental acuity are “fair” lines of attack during going into the 2024 presidential election.
“Anybody can get a name mixed up. Seven times is kind of a lot,” Pelosi replied, turning back to the substance of Trump’s accusation and claiming that he lied and had repeatedly refused to send the National Guard to help.
“The fact is, he was lying about the fact that he would not send the National Guard to the Capitol when Chuck Schumer, Mitch McConnell, and Nancy Pelosi were begging him to do it all day,” she said, referring to herself in the third person.
According to former Trump aide Kash Patel, the initial decision to not have the National Guard present on January 6th was made days before by Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

NBC News, “Meet the Press”:
Former Governor Nikki Haley, who is challenging Trump in the GOP primary, weighed in on the E. Jean Carroll defamation case — in which Trump was ordered to pay out more than $83 million — during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Haley said that she had no reason to challenge the jury’s decision, but she argued that it should not be used to disqualify Trump from running his campaign: “I just don’t think that should take him off the ballot.”

Haley took aim at the Republican National Committee (RNC) during the same interview, accusing the organization of working to coronate the former president rather than approaching the primary in a fair and unbiased way.
“If you’re going to go in and basically tell the American people that you’re going to go and decide who the nominee is after only two states have voted. I mean, 48 states out there. This is a democracy. The American people want to have their say in who is going to be their nominee. We need to give them that,” she said.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) sat down with anchor Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday” to discuss the articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“I call him the architect of destruction,” McCaul said, arguing that Mayorcas knew exactly what he was doing. “Eight million encounters, 300 on the terror watch list, 200 million people dead now thanks to fentanyl poisoning — that this one man is responsible for — I think that is a dereliction of duty.”
