‘The Scenes In Liverpool Are Appalling’: Driver Plows Through Crowd Of Soccer Fans In U.K.

A driver crashed his vehicle into a crowd of parade-goers in Liverpool, England, on Monday as thousands of soccer fans celebrated the city’s football club.

Police said a man rammed his vehicle through a crowded street, knocking down and running over pedestrians before he was stopped. Police confirmed that they had arrested “a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.”

“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a post on X. “I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.”

“I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate,” he added.

Video of the incident shows a gray van knocking a slew of pedestrians out of the way as it appeared to swerve into the crowd. Another angle appeared to show at least one person trapped beneath the car as emergency workers surrounded the area.

Video of the suspected driver’s arrest showed a team of police officers keeping the crowd back. Several men appeared to rush officers as if trying to get their hands on the suspect.

“Then people started rushing to go after the driver and they tried to break the car. The police did everything to block and to push people away,” she told Sky News. “We could just hear screams. We were very confused. Some of my friends were down there and the car was so near them. It was a horrible scene, nobody was expecting it.”

Thousands of fans lined a 10-mile long parade route on Monday after Liverpool Football Club won the English Premier League. The club locked up the title last month before the end of the season, but players hoisted the Premier League trophy on Sunday.

“We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening,” the club said in a statement after the vehicle attack.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident,” it continued. “We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”

After the ceremony, Trump delivered remarks marking Memorial Day and the sacrifice of members of the United States military.

“These warriors picked up the mantle of duty and service, knowing that to live for others meant always that they might die for others. They asked nothing. They gave everything. And we owe them everything and more,” Trump said.

“The greatest monument to their courage is not carved in marble or cast in bronze — it’s all around us, an American nation 325 million strong, which will soon be greater than it has ever before,” he continued.

During his remarks, Trump told the stories of a couple fallen heroes. He told of Senior Chief Petty Officer Shannon Kent, who was killed by a suicide bomber in Syria in 2019. Kent was the wife of Joe Kent, a former GOP candidate for Congress who now serves as the chief of staff for Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

The president also spoke of Senior Master Sergeant Elroy Harworth, who was killed while fighting in Vietnam.

Trump honored fallen warriors, calling them “America’s best and bravest.”

“We just revere their incredible legacy,” said Trump. “We salute them in their eternal and everlasting glory. And we continue our relentless pursuit of America’s destiny as we make our nation stronger, prouder, freer, and greater than ever before.”
