‘60 Minutes’ Segment: U.S. Taxpayers ‘Subsidizing’ Ukraine’s Economy, Paying All Of Their First Responders

A “60 Minutes” segment broadcast on Sunday caused an uproar after the show reported that American taxpayers are “subsidizing” Ukraine’s economy and paying for all of Ukraine’s first responders.

The news comes as a recent Fox News poll found that 56% of Republicans say the U.S. should be sending less support to Ukraine. A recent CNN poll found that 55% of Americans say Congress should not authorize additional funding to support Ukraine.

“American taxpayers are financing more than just weapons. We discovered the U.S. government’s buying seeds and fertilizer for Ukrainian farmers… and covering the salaries of Ukraine’s first responders – all 57,000 of them,” the CBS News show reported. “That includes the team that trains this rescue dog – named Joy – to comb through the wreckage of Russian strikes looking for survivors.”

“And the U.S. also funds the divers who we saw clearing unexploded ammunition from the country’s rivers – to make them safe again for swimming and fishing,” the segment continued. “Russia’s invasion shrank Ukraine’s economy by about a third. We were surprised to find that to keep it afloat the U.S. government is subsidizing small businesses.”

Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell responded to the video: “Billions for Ukrainian farmers, first responders and Ukrainian entrepreneurs?! Why? The U.S. should be doing the tough work of peacemaking. We need aggressive diplomats if you want to avoid war. Where is the draft peace plan?”

“Such things shouldn’t need to be discovered by media outlets,” said Fox News contributor Guy Benson. “If this is what we are subsidizing, make a fully transparent case for it.”

Fox News co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy added: “As American farmers, ranchers & small businesses suffer from Biden’s climate/energy policies & basic city services are strained & cut because of his open border policies, Joe Biden is subsidizing THIS!!??!! Don’t tell me Biden isn’t compromised.”

Bob Menendez Hires Hunter Biden’s Lawyer For Federal Corruption Case

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) has hired the lawyer representing President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, after Menendez was indicted last week on federal corruption charges.

CNBC reported that Menendez hired Abbe Lowell to represent him in the case — the same lawyer that he hired in 2015 to represent him in a similar corruption case, although legal experts have said that the evidence in the current case is much stronger.

Lowell was hired by Hunter Biden after his plea deal fell apart in federal court last month which eventually led to prosecutors charging Hunter Biden on firearm-related charges.

The federal indictment was unsealed against Menendez on Friday, and it accused the senator and his wife of accepting bribes from three business people in exchange for actions that he took as chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee. According to the DOJ, the bribes were intended to protect the businessmen and to benefit Egypt.

Menendez faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted of the charges, which include conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right.

“Those bribes included cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other things of value,” the indictment said. Federal authorities reportedly found gold bars and nearly $500,000 in cash stuffed throughout the senator’s home that they traced back to the businessmen Menendez allegedly worked with.

Several top Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), have called on Menendez to resign over the scandal, while many others, especially in the U.S. Senate, have remained silent on the issue.

Menendez responded to the indictment by suggesting that he was the victim of a vast conspiracy that was plotting against him, in-part because he was Latino.

“It is not lost on me how quickly some are rushing to judge a Latino and push him out of his seat,” he later added. “I am not going anywhere.”
