When California Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell — who once accused Texas GOP Senator Ted Cruz of “defending Nazis” — challenged Cruz with a bet on the upcoming playoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers, Cruz fired back a stinging response.

The Cowboys and 49ers face off in the NFC Divisional Round on Sunday, the ninth time the two teams have met each other in playoffs.

“I will make this open bet to @tedcruz — if the @dallascowboys beat the @49ers I won’t tweet for the rest of January. If the @49ers win you can’t tweet for rest of January. How Texan are you, Ted? Deal?” Swalwell tweeted.

Cruz had a ready response referencing Swalwell’s infamous association with a Chinese spy, replying, “How about we bet a Chinese dinner instead?”

In October 2021, Swalwell took a swipe at Cruz, saying that Cruz was “defending Nazis”  after Cruz referenced a parent who gestured with a Nazi salute at a school board meeting in order to point out that the incidents in the NSBA letter that seemingly precipitated Attorney General Merrick Garland’s memo targeting parents at school board meetings were largely non-violent incidents.

Cruz fired back, “You are frequently a liar (when you’re not sleeping with Chinese spies).”

He added, “But here, you’re [sic] lie is exactly 180 degrees false. I was defending the right of citizens to denounce authoritarian policies. In other words, to OPPOSE Nazis (or petty tyrants), not to support them.”

The exchange that prompted Swalwell’s attempt at smearing Cruz involved Cruz questioning Garland.

Cruz asked Garland, “Let me ask you something, [Attorney] General Garland: In the letter, which you told the House of Representatives was the basis for this abusive memo targeting parents, how many incidents are cited in that memo?”

“I have to look back through the memo,” Garland answered.

“You don’t know. How many of them were violent?” Cruz asked.

“Again, the general report—” Garland began.

“How many of them were violent?” Cruz persisted.

“I don’t know,” Garland admitted.

Cruz asserted, “You don’t know. And there’s a reason you don’t know. Because you didn’t care and nobody in your office cared to find out. I did a quick count just sitting here during this hearing; I counted 20 incidents cited. Of the 20, 15 on their face are non-violent. They involve things like insults; they involve a Nazi salute. That’s one of the examples. My God, a parent did a Nazi salute at a school board because he thought the policies were oppressive. General Garland, is doing a Nazi salute at an elected official, is that protected by the First Amendment?”

Garland replied, “Yes, it is.”

That was not the first time Cruz has blistered Swalwell for his past actions vis-à-vis China; in December 2020, Cruz issued a tweet targeting Swalwell, who had denounced President Trump as an agent of Russia but then was revealed to have gotten so “close” with a Communist Chinese spy that the FBI felt compelled to intervene. Cruz tweeted, “More than once, I’ve said ‘screw the Chinese communists.’ Little did I know how closely Swalwell was listening.”

As The Daily Wire reported, a suspected Chinese spy operating in the Bay Area during the Obama administration reportedly got so close to Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) that the FBI had to intervene and provide him with a defensive briefing. Alleged Chinese spy Christine Fang’s ties to Swalwell began when he was a councilmember for Dublin City, California, which is part of China’s long-term strategy of getting in with people before they make it big on the national stage. Fang met Swalwell through a Chinese student organization and by 2014 had quickly “developed close ties to Swalwell’s office” and was a “bundler” for him — meaning that she helped him bring in big donors.

Axios reported that federal investigators were alarmed by Fang’s behavior and activities and, in 2015, they shared their concerns with the congressmen in a defensive briefing. After the briefing, Swalwell cut off all ties to Fang, according to a current U.S. intelligence official.

As Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of nuclear war in recent months, some scientists conducted a study to determine the safest place to shelter in a “moderate damage zone” – the area where concrete buildings don’t collapse – in case of a nuclear attack.

“As for the idea that Russia wouldn’t use such weapons first under any circumstances, then it means we wouldn’t be able to be the second to use them either – because the possibility to do so in case of an attack on our territory would be very limited,” Putin stated in December. “Nevertheless, we have a strategy… namely, as a defense, we consider weapons of mass destruction, nuclear weapons – it is all based around the so-called retaliatory strike. That is, when we are struck, we strike in response.”

In mid-September, Putin issued a frightening statement, saying, “Russia will use all the instruments at its disposal to counter a threat against its territorial integrity—this is not a bluff.”

 Researchers at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus, who used computer modeling to simulate a nuclear blast explosion of a 750 kT atomic warhead, stated in their study, “Obviously, near the nuclear bomb detonation, the devastation would be widespread, and the fatality rate would be practically 100%. However, outside of the severe damage zone (SDZ), the effect of the blast reduces and survivability increases.”

“The force hitting a standing person indoors is equivalent to several g-forces of body mass acceleration and could lift a person off the ground and throw them to the walls,” the study states.

In case of a nuclear attack, people should stay inside a concrete building, and if in a corridor, hide in a corner rather than the middle of the corridor, the researchers advise, writing, “The supersonic shock waves arising from the blast undergo expansion as they enter a room through an opening leading to channeling effects. The results show that most of the air is directed toward the corridor rather than through the opposite room’s door, leading to high airspeed developed in rooms further down the aisle,” the researchers note.

“If people see the explosion from far away they have to take shelter ASAP,” author Dimitris Drikakis told The Daily Mail. He also stated, “Before our study, the danger to people inside a concrete-reinforced building that withstands the blast wave was unclear.”
