US Navy Has Been Using Xbox Controllers for Submarine Periscopes Since 2018

Earlier in the week news broke out the missing OceanGate submarine used a game controller to operate the entire submarine.

The new details were revealed after a resurfaced video from 2022 showed the CEO of OceanGate Stockton Rush showing a CBS News correspondent a Logitech gaming controller and saying “We run the whole thing with this game controller.”

The news of the submarine using a Logitech controller sent social media users into a frenzy.

It even caused Logitech’s stock to drop.

Oh come on, this isn't fair to Logitech. They didn't design this controller with the idea it would be used to control a sub for a bunch of tech/boss bros. pic.twitter.com/MYdBF5bXD4

Many users on social media couldn’t fathom the fact that tourists were paying $250,000 to get inside of a submarine controlled by a gaming controller but the truth is the US Navy has even started to use Xbox controllers to operate some components of its submarines.

In 2018, the US Navy started to use Xbox controllers to operate some submarine’s periscopes because it saved money and made it easier for younger sailors to operate.

Using a game controller in a submarine is not inherently insane. The Navy uses Xbox controllers. But… wired. And… not control the sub's movement. https://t.co/jiUUTXkobX

The Washington Post reported exclusively on the US Navy’s use of Xbox controllers back in 2017.

Per The Washington Post:

The U.S. Navy plans to equip its Virginia-class submarines with Xbox 360 controllers, which will control the ship’s periscopes.

The joystick now being used, along with its corresponding control panel developed by Lockheed Martin, cost about $38,000, according to engadget. An Xbox 360 controller, meanwhile, goes for about $30 and can be purchased just about anywhere that carries toys.

“That joystick is by no means cheap, and it is only designed to fit on a Virginia-class submarine,” Senior Chief Mark Eichenlaub, the John Warner’s assistant navigator, told the Virginian-Pilot. “I can go to any video game store and procure an Xbox controller anywhere in the world, so it makes a very easy replacement.” It doesn’t hurt that many young sailors grew up using the controllers to play videos games such as “Halo.”

Granted, operating an entire submarine with a gaming controller is a lot different than just using the controller to operate a periscope.

Geraldo Rivera Quits Fox News’ Most Popular TV Show and Whines Afterward

This is certainly news no one should be upset over: arguably the most despicable member on Fox News is no longer part of its most popular show.

Geraldo Rivera announced on Twitter this morning he was leaving “The Five.” He said he was the “odd man out.”

The last scheduled appearance for Rivera will come on June 30. He says he still remains the Correspondent at Large, for now.

Morning, it’s official, I’m off @TheFive. My last scheduled show appearances are Thursday and Friday June 29th and 30th. It’s been a great run and I appreciate having had the opportunity. Being odd man out isn’t always easy. For the time being, I’m still Correspondent at Large.

We should have all seen this day coming. Last month, Cristina Laila reported Rivera’s appearances on Fox News were abruptly cancelled for a temporary period.

Rivera later gave an interview with the Associated Press (AP) claiming that it was his decision to leave “The Five” but Fox News “didn’t race after me to say, ‘Geraldo, please come back.’”

He whined that the “tension” on the show just did not make it worthwhile anymore.

There has been a growing tension that goes beyond editorial differences and personal annoyances and gripes. It’s not worth it to me.

I’m 80 years old. I don’t want the friction. “The Five” is too intimate a place and it gets too personal.

One could say this is code for: “I was tired of Greg Gutfeld destroying me every time I made an ignorant statement or acted snobby.”

Rivera also strongly suggested during the interview that he will be leaving Fox News altogether once his contract expires in January 2025.

The only bad news regarding this development is he will no longer serve as Gutfeld’s punching bag. Although it is safe to say America’ most popular late night host is not upset over the news.

America, for its part, is rejoicing:

What a welcome loss!
Geraldo Rivera will no longer be on Fox’s “The Five” show.

I don’t know about you, but @Foxnews should have parted ways with Rivera years ago.

He’s every bit as dumb as Hunter, if not dumber.https://t.co/rezrapuvHU

‘Thank God!’ Twitter wastes no time responding when Geraldo announces he’s out at The Five

Cry harder, Geraldo 😅😅

Time to celebrate, Patriots! We did it!! https://t.co/0qXPExlQUe via @BIZPACReview

Geraldo Rivera had been canceled 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👇https://t.co/G66f7ubs8f

One user also made an interesting point: Fox News would be in far better shape had they canned Rivera instead of Tucker.

Perhaps had they got rid of this annoying leftist instead of running off Tucker et al., they wouldn’t be in their Bud like mess.https://t.co/5iYUtDtSDQ
