Florida rescue helicopter pilot describes hearing loud bangs before fatal crash into apartment: NTSB report

A Florida rescue pilot described what happened in the moments before his helicopter caught fire and crashed into an apartment building, killing two people, according to a report released Friday.

Pilot Daron Roche said he heard the bang at about 400 feet shortly after the twin-engine Broward County Fire-Rescue helicopter took off from Pompano Beach Airpark on Aug. 28, the National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report said. The crew was on the way to pick up a victim injured in a traffic accident.

Roche said his control panel showed that one engine’s temperature was rising. He radioed air traffic controllers about the emergency and tried to return to the airport, according to the report.

The fire warning light had illuminated, so he activated the suppression system, but the temperature gauge kept rising, Roche told investigators.

Roche said he heard a second bang before spinning out of control. The report said the tail had partially separated from the helicopter.

The helicopter crashed into an apartment building, killing paramedic Captain Terryson Jackson and apartment resident Lurean Wheaton. Roche and paramedic Mike Chaguaceda were injured.

The helicopter was built in 1999 and its engines were rebuilt seven years ago, the report said. The helicopter was last inspected in May.

The safety board has not yet determined what caused the fire. Its investigations usually take about a year to complete.

Las Vegas cop shot at home in alleged robbery gone wrong, family claims officer was targeted

A Las Vegas police officer was wounded in a shooting at home in what appeared to be a robbery gone wrong.

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department said it is investigating a shooting that happened Friday afternoon near Lone Mountain Road and the 215, according to 8 News Now. The officer, who has not been publicly identified, is recovering in the hospital after the incident.

The cop's family said they believe the officer was targeted by the suspects.

In an interview on Saturday, the officer told 8 News Now that they sustained two bullet wounds in the leg after two suspects attempted to rob their home.

Residents in the Northwest Valley neighborhood where the officer lives are concerned about their safety after the shooting.

"One of the things I would like to see put up are some of the security cameras, and things like that, around the neighborhood, so we can keep an eye on it," said Chris Ideker, who lives near the officer's home.

Several neighbors said they witnessed a chaotic crime scene in which marked and unmarked police vehicles were at the property. Neighbors said detectives told them they are investigating whether the suspects climbed over a wall to reach the officer’s home, which is inside a gated community.

The neighbors said they are worried that an officer could be shot in broad daylight inside their home.

"I happened to see the officer sitting over there on the planter by his house, and I could see there was a little bit of blood on the side. I knew he’d been wounded," Ideker said.

The officer's injuries required surgery, which took place on Saturday.
