Dem Senators Play Defense After NYT Editorial On Biden’s Age

A pair of Senate Democrats on Sunday defended President Joe Biden after a New York Times editorial raised concerns about the commander-in-chief’s age.

“Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd asked Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, if Biden should be doing more to assure Americans he is up to the job as the 2024 election approaches.

“I think his schedule reflects an active person, mentally and physically, who is engaging with the American people on a regular basis,” Durbin said during the NBC News interview.

Todd asked the question after sharing an excerpt from the editorial about Biden, published on Saturday following reports saying the president is expected to announce his re-election campaign this week. Already the oldest person to be president at 80, Biden would be 86 at the end of a second term.

“Concerns about age — both in terms of fitness for office and being out of touch with the moment — are legitimate, as Mr. Biden acknowledged in an interview in February with ABC News. His standard line, repeated in that interview, is: “The only thing I can say is, ‘Watch me,’” the editorial says.

“But Mr. Biden has given voters very few chances to do just that — to watch him — and his refusal to engage with the public regularly raises questions about his age and health,” the editorial adds.

Durbin went on to explain how he has seen evidence first-hand that assures him that Biden is still a capable president.

“I don’t know what more they’re asking for, but I’ve been in meetings with him time after time,” Durbin said. “His performance tells me he’s up to the job, and does it well.”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who endorsed Biden in 2020 upon ending her own presidential bid, faced similar questions about Biden’s fitness to serve during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

"How do you think President Biden could overcome [concerns about his age and mental stamina]?"

“President Biden has such a strong record to run on,” Klobuchar said.

After reciting aspects of Biden’s record, Klobuchar argued the incumbent offers Americans a “steady hand” in the White House, comparing him to former President Donald Trump, who is running for re-election.

“People don’t want that chaos back again,” Klobuchar added.

West Virginia GOP Governor Set To Launch Senate Campaign For Joe Manchin’s Seat: Reports

West Virginia Republican Governor Jim Justice is set to announce a 2024 campaign for the seat held by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), according to multiple reports.

An invitation teases a “special announcement” at Justice’s Greenbrier Resort in White Sulfur Springs on Thursday at 5 p.m. Sources told local CBS affiliate WOWK 13 News and POLITICO that Justice plans to announce his Senate bid at that event, which is taking place on his 72nd birthday, but that plan could change at the last minute.

Justice, a wealthy coal tycoon, was elected governor in 2016 as a Democrat. The following year, he switched to the Republican Party. He is now nearing the end of his second term and is limited to two consecutive terms as governor.

A recent Morning Consult poll shows Justice is more popular than Manchin with Republicans, Democrats, and independents among registered voters in West Virginia.

Justice alluded to his plans during his State of the State address in January.

“I won’t be your governor for a whole lot longer, but I surely won’t go away. You’ll probably be able to find me at home or you may find me in Washington,” Justice said.

GOP senators have reportedly been working to recruit Justice for a Senate campaign against Manchin as they try to wrest control of the upper chamber from the Democrats.

A moderate Democrat and former West Virginia governor, Manchin won re-election in 2018, two years after Donald Trump emerged victorious in the state’s presidential election by 42 points. Manchin and Arizona’s now-independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema often serve as a roadblock to leftist proposals in Congress.

Manchin has yet to announce whether he will seek re-election in the upper chamber. The senator told NBC News earlier this month he would not make a decision about his 2024 plans “until the end of the year.” Across multiple recent interviews, Manchin has also dodged questions about his future party affiliation and whether he will run for president.

The Senate race already has a contender in Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV), who announced a campaign for Manchin’s Senate seat in November.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) declared his support for Mooney last week, touting the congressman as a “strong conservative” who will “represent the values” of West Virginia in the Senate, according to Fox News. The Club for Growth PAC also endorsed his campaign.
