NHL Reverses Course On ‘Discriminatory’ Job Fair After DeSantis Warns It Won’t Be Tolerated In Florida

The National Hockey League (NHL) reversed course late this week over a controversial job fair that was deemed “discriminatory” after Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis warned that it would not be tolerated in the state of Florida.

The job posting was for the NHL’s first “Pathway to Hockey Summit” that is scheduled to take place on February 2 during the league’s All Star festivities in South Florida.

“The Pathway to Hockey Summit is a career event for diverse job seekers who are pursuing careers in hockey,” the NHL said in the now-deleted job posting on LinkedIn. “The day will be filled with guest speakers and panelists, networking opportunities, and more!”

“If you are looking for your opportunity to meet with recruiters from the NHL League Office and at least 10 of our NHL teams, we welcome you to register,” the posting continued. “Participants must be 18 years of age or older, based in the U.S., and identify as female, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, and/or a person with a disability. Veterans are also welcome and encouraged to attend.”

The NHL claimed in a statement to Fox News that the original wording of the posting was “not accurate,” adding that the event “is an informational and networking event designed to encourage all individuals to consider a career in our game – and, in particular, alert those who might not be familiar with hockey to the opportunities it offers.”

The league said that the event was open to anyone who wanted to attend as long as they were at least 18 years old.

The league’s reversal came after Bryan Griffin, a spokesman for the governor, responded to the job fair in a statement, saying that this type of discriminatory job posting would not be tolerated in the state of Florida and that the league needs to “immediately remove and denounce the discriminatory prohibitions it has imposed.”

“Discrimination of any sort is not welcome in the state of Florida, and we do not abide by the woke notion that discrimination should be overlooked if applied in a politically popular manner or against a politically unpopular demographic,” DeSantis’ office said in a statement. “We are fighting all discrimination in our schools and our workplaces, and we will fight it in publicly accessible places of meeting or activity.”

“We call upon the National Hockey League to immediately remove and denounce the discriminatory prohibitions it has imposed on attendance to the 2023 ‘Pathway to Hockey’ summit,” the statement continued.

‘Unacceptable Attack’: Biden Admin Slammed After DOJ Announces New Pistol Brace Regulation

Gun rights groups criticized the Biden administration after the Department of Justice announced a new gun control proposal that would regulate pistols with stabilizing braces.

The rule, announced on Friday, was developed after a directive from President Joe Biden to regulate the use of such braces, which he said could effectively turn pistols into short-barreled rifles. According to the National Firearms Act, a weapon classified as a short-barreled rifle needs a federal license.

“Keeping our communities safe from gun violence is among the Department’s highest priorities,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland. “Today’s rule makes clear that firearm manufacturers, dealers, and individuals cannot evade these important public safety protections simply by adding accessories to pistols that transform them into short-barreled rifles.”

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) followed Biden’s directive and developed the rule, which was submitted to the Federal Register on Friday. The rule will require owners of stabilizing braces to register their guns as short-barreled rifles.

“This rule enhances public safety and prevents people from circumventing the laws Congress passed almost a century ago. In the days of Al Capone, Congress said back then that short-barreled rifles and sawed-off shotguns should be subjected to greater legal requirements than most other guns,” ATF Director Steve Dettelbach said.

The DOJ also said gun owners could return their braces or surrender “covered short-barreled rifles to ATF.”

The rule was widely criticized by Second Amendment groups as well as Republicans.

Senior Vice President of Gun Owners of America (GOA) Erich Pratt said that his group’s legal arm would be filing a suit to challenge the rule, noting that pistol braces are used by disabled individuals to safely use handguns.

“President Biden just initiated the largest federal gun registration scheme in our nation’s history without even the passage of a new law. GOA is actively working with Congress to pass a resolution blocking this rule under the Congressional Review Act,” said Aidan Johnson, the director of federal affairs for GOA.

The Congressional Review Act allows Congress to nullify regulations within 60 days of their proposal.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) said that the Biden administration had chosen to “shred the Constitution” with the new regulation.

Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) called the rule an “ unacceptable attack” on the Second Amendment and law-abiding Americans. “The ATF’s announced rule on pistol braces today is nothing short of a massive executive branch-imposed gun registration and confiscation scheme,” he said on Twitter.
