‘Hi. Goodnight, Everybody’: Even Liberals Admit Fetterman’s Debate Performance Was Abysmal

Tuesday night’s debate between two Senate hopefuls in Pennsylvania turned out to be a disaster for one of them.

The performance of Democrat John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke over the summer and has clearly not fully recovered, was so bad even liberals were forced to admit just how truly awful it was.

The train wreck began from the first words the Lurch-like Fetterman uttered: “Hi. Goodnight, everybody.”

What the …!?

At one point, Fetterman was asked about his position on fracking, with a debate moderator noting he said in a 2018 interview that he completely opposed the practice.

“I do support fracking — I don’t, I don’t — I support fracking, and I stand — and I do support fracking,” he stammered.

At another point, Fetterman was asked: “Has the Biden administration overspent?”

Fetterman: “Here’s what I think we have to fight about inflation here right now.”

Huh?

Throughout the debate, Fetterman proved he is simply not cognitively able to serve in the Senate. His comprehension was so bad after his stroke that he had to have giant Teleprompters erected in order to read what his opponent, Dr. Mehmet Oz, was saying.

Of course, recovery from a stroke is difficult and everyone hopes Fetterman fully recovers. But it’s an odd time for him to seek a six-year gig in the world’s most exclusive debate club, where comprehension in fast-paced oratories is key.

Before the debate, Fetterman’s campaign said there would be “awkward pauses” and “delays and errors” as the candidate would be reading closed captioning because of his “auditory processing issue.”

Afterward, they declared victory and blamed Fetterman’s dismal performance on the closed captioning — which they had demanded.

“We are thrilled with John’s performance. He did remarkably well tonight — especially when you consider that he’s still recovering from a stroke and was working off of delayed captions filled with errors. John won countless exchanges, counter-punched aggressively, and pushed back on Oz’s cruelty and attacks,” said Joe Calvello, Fetterman’s communications director.

Gary Weitman, communications chief for Nexstar, which ran the closed captioning, fired back, saying, “It is unfortunate that Mr. Fetterman is now criticizing the closed captioning process employed by Nexstar during tonight’s debate.”

“Both candidates agreed to the technical set-up for the closed captioning process weeks ago, which was implemented at the request of the Fetterman campaign. Both candidates were offered the opportunity for two full rehearsals with the same equipment used in tonight’s debate; Mr. Fetterman chose to do only one,” he said.

At another point, a debate moderator asked: “You say that you will hold big corporations accountable for what you call price gouging. How will you do that?”

Fetterman: “Exactly. Dr. Oz has never seen an oil company he wouldn’t swipe right on.”

And at yet another point, while discussing the minimum wage, Fetterman said: “How can a man, you know, with with 10 gigantic mansions has — am willing to talk about willing wage for anybody? Imagine a signal mom trying with two children trying to raise with them.”

After the debate, CNN host Alisyn Camerota said she was unsettled by the spectacle. “I’ve interviewed him many times as lieutenant governor,’ she said. “And he sounds – he’s sounded different before the stroke. In the interviews, he was much more, sort of, clear spoken than what I’m hearing.”

Some Democrats agree, with David Axelrod, a Democrat strategist who served as a senior adviser to Obama, writing on Twitter: “‘Fetterman needed to show he’s sufficiently recovered, and this debate surely did not help.”

Another huge liberal, former CNN host Chris Cuomo, said on his NewsNation show he was troubled by the performance.

“John Fetterman struggled,” Cuomo said. “He clearly is dealing with health issues that affect his ability to process and his ability to speak. Clearly, fitness for office is going to be on the table.”

“That may not be fair, to some, for me to say – but if the voters aren’t talking about it, I’ll be shocked,” Cuomo said.

Oh, they’re talking about it, Chris.

Fetterman's comms director defends debate performance, says he 'took it to Dr. Oz pretty f—ing hard tonight'

The campaign for John Fetterman, a Democrat seeking to represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate, is going on the offensive following Tuesday night’s debate with Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Immediately after the debate, Joe Calvello, Fetterman's communications director, participated in a press conference where he told reporters the campaign was excited about Fetterman’s "great" performance.

"For a guy who was just in a hospital months ago, took it to Dr. Oz pretty f—ing hard tonight," Calvello told the group.

While many regarded Fetterman’s health to have hindered him during the debate, Calvello suggested his candidate was firing on all cylinders.

PENNSYLVANIA SENATE DEBATE: OZ DECLARES VICTORY OVER FETTERMAN AS THE TWO CLASHED OVER ABORTION, FRACKING

"He won countless exchanges," the communications director said. "He counterpunched and withstood Oz's cruel and, frankly, sleazy attacks. And honestly, this was a great debate for John."

He added: "John spoke better tonight than he did in the primary. He gave a better performance tonight and he gave him the primary. His doctor has said he's fit to serve, not doctor Oz, who's a phony doctor."

In his remarks, Calvello also pointed out several comments from Dr. Oz, which he claimed painted him as "cruel" and someone who embraces "full extremism."

"Let's talk about how this debate opened us, came out and said, I want to restore stability to Washington. Did you find anything about what he said tonight civil? All he did was do cruel and vicious attacks," he said.

Calvello also drew attention to Oz’s answer to a question on making abortion legal.

"We saw his full extremism on display in the moment of the night he said local political leaders, leaders like [Republican candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania] Doug Mastriano should be making decisions about women's health care and the freedom of choice."

WHO WON THE PENNSYLVANIA SENATE DEBATE? PEOPLE WEIGH IN ON FETTERMAN'S HEALTH, DR. OZ'S ABORTION ANSWER

"And he would fight for the big corporations who are jacking up our prices. He would fight for the oil and gas companies that are ripping us up at the pump while they are making record profits. Oz couldn't even answer a single yes or no question about a national abortion ban, about a bipartisan gun control bill. In fact, the only question as answered really clearly tonight is that he will endorse Trump yet again in 2024."

During the debate, Oz said the legality of abortion should be decided at the local level and not by the federal government.

"There should not be involvement from the federal government in how states decide their abortion decisions," Oz said. "As a physician, I've been in the room when there are some difficult conversations happening. I don't want the federal government involved with that at all. I want women, doctors, local political leaders, letting the democracy that's always allowed our nation to thrive, to put the best ideas forward so states can decide for themselves."

OZ, FETTERMAN SPAR OVER ABORTION, DEM WON’T SAY WHEN LIMITS SHOULD BE

The Oz campaign swiftly declared their candidate the winner of the debate and said Dr. Oz would best "represent all Pennsylvanians." The campaign also described Fetterman’s performance as a "complete disaster."

"We saw tonight a debate that was a complete disaster for John Fetterman. He wasn't able to defend any of his radical positions tonight," said Oz Campaign Manager Casey Contres.

The campaign also said Fetterman "failed to offer a coherent answer on why he would raise taxes. He failed to explain to people why he wants to let convicted murderers out of prison. He failed to admit that he called fracking a stain on Pennsylvania."

"The contrast between Dr. Oz and John Fetterman was clear during tonight's debate," Contres continued. "Radical John Fetterman couldn't defend why he has repeatedly pushed for extreme policies like decriminalizing heroin, banning fracking, and pardoning cold-blooded murderers. Dr. Oz articulated how he would restore balance to Washington and find common-sense solutions to lower costs for families and make our streets safer."

Fetterman and Dr. Oz are running to fill a U.S. Senate seat to represent Pennsylvania which will be vacated by a retiring Pat Toomey, who has been a senator since 2011.

Oz trails slightly behind Fetterman in national polling, by about 2.3 points — or within the margin of error of most polls.
