Morning Brief: Doctors Pull Back On Trans Kids, Minnesota ICE ‘Drawdown,’ & Iran Talks Teeter

The so-called consensus surrounding “gender transitions” for minors begins to unravel, border czar Tom Homan announces a “drawdown” of federal immigration officers from Minneapolis, and talks teeter between Washington and Tehran while tensions with Beijing appear to be calming.

It’s Thursday, February 5, 2026, and this is the news you need to know to start your day. Today’s edition of the Morning Wire podcast can be heard below:

Medical Groups Walk Back Support For Child Trans Surgeries

In the wake of a landmark detransitioner verdict, the support of transgender surgeries for minors appears to be crumbling. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the largest association of plastic surgeons in the world, said that available evidence does not support trans surgeries for gender-confused kids, and also said there was “insufficient” evidence for placing children on puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones. The statement was unique among major medical groups and associations. Essentially, all support these surgeries and treatments for minors despite mounting evidence that shows them to be harmful and irreversible. Following the ASPS, the American Medical Association, which wields major influence as the nation’s largest medical association, reversed course, too. The AMA told National Review that it “agrees” with the ASPS that “surgical interventions in minors should be generally deferred to adulthood.” The statement is a huge shift for the AMA.

Minneapolis Drawdown

Border czar Tom Homan has announced a “drawdown” of hundreds of federal immigration officers from Minneapolis. Seven hundred federal immigration officers and agents left the Twin Cities area on Wednesday. Homan said the force reduction is the result of deals with “an unprecedented number of counties” to “allow ICE to take custody of illegal aliens before they hit the streets.” The reduction will leave 2,000 federal immigration agents in Minnesota, along with the teams working on fraud investigations. Homan insisted that the Trump administration isn’t “surrendering” its mass deportation campaign. “This is smart law enforcement, not less law enforcement. This is safer for the community, safer for the officers, and safer for the alien,” said Homan.

Iran Talks Teeter On Scope Of Negotiations

Talks between Washington and Tehran may be on the verge of collapse after Iranian attacks on U.S. ships. Washington and Tehran are still on track for a meeting on Friday. But it’s been a messy ride. The two sides were supposed to meet in Turkey, but Iran’s foreign minister said Wednesday that talks will now take place in Oman. There are also significant questions over the scope of the negotiations. Iran wants to focus on its nuclear program. But Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on Wednesday that in order for talks to “lead to something meaningful, they will have to include certain things” – such as Iran’s nuclear program, but also ballistic missiles, Iran’s sponsorship of terror groups across the region, and the treatment of the Iranian people.

Savannah Guthrie And Siblings Demand Proof Of Life In Video Plea For Their Mother

For the first time since the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, Savannah and her two siblings have spoken out.

In a video released Wednesday night, Savannah and her brother and sister pleaded with the perpetrator for proof of life of their mother, who appears to have been taken from her home outside of Tucson, Arizona.

“We too have heard the reports about a ransom letter in the media,” Savannah said. “As a family, we are doing everything that we can. We are ready to talk. However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us.”

Savannah and her sister, Annie, and brother, Camron, then spoke directly to their mother.

“Mommy if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman,” Savannah said. “You are God’s precious daughter, Nancy. We believe and know that even in this valley, He is with you. Everyone is looking for you, Mommy, everywhere. We will not rest. Your children will not rest until we are together again. We speak to you every moment and we pray without ceasing. And we rejoice in advance for the day that we hold you in our arms again.”

“Mama if you are listening we need you to come home, we miss you,” Annie said.

The siblings said in the video Nancy is in constant pain and needs medicine to survive and not suffer.

After the release of the video, Nancy Grace told Fox News the ransom notes that officials are looking into need to be taken seriously. The veteran crime journalist, who previously worked with Savannah at Court TV said Savannah knows the law like the back of her hand and wouldn’t make a plea to the perpetrator if she didn’t think something in the letter was accurate.

KGUN, one of the news outlets that reportedly received a ransom note regarding Nancy, said in a statement the note had included a deadline, saying that the millions of cryptocurrency demanded had to be received by Thursday — and if it was not received by Monday, the note’s author threatened to kill Nancy.

President Donald Trump spoke to Savannah Wednesday afternoon. Shortly after the Today Show host released the gut-wrenching video, Trump posted this on TruthSocial.

“I spoke with Savannah Guthrie, and let her know that I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s, and Local Law Enforcement’s, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump said. “We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely. The prayers of our Nation are with her and her family. GOD BLESS AND PROTECT NANCY! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Pima County Sheriff’s Office officials said Wednesday morning they have no suspects or person of interest in the case.

Sheriff Chris Nanos hasn’t confirmed whether Nancy was targeted or if the crime was random.

The next update from Sheriff Chris Nanos will be at 11:00 a.m. MST Thursday.
