LA City Council racist audio leak: Cedillo, de León booted from committee seats amid BLM pressure to resign

Leaked audio capturing racist remarks between Latino members of the Los Angeles City Council prompted the removal of another two council members from their committee seats amid continued pressure from Black Lives Matter protesters for them to resign from the government body altogether.

Council members Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo were pulled from committee assignments regarding real estate development, housing, homelessness and other matters, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Acting Los Angeles City Council President Mitch O’Farrell made the announcement on Monday.

This comes after Nury Martinez first resigned as President of the Los Angeles City Council before ultimately forfeiting her council seat altogether last week. Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera had also already resigned from his powerful union leadership position.

Black Lives Matter protesters have been staged outside de León’s home in Eagle Rock.

BLM leaders are demanding Martinez be replaced by one of the council's African American members to "demonstrate its commitment to Black political empowerment and political and racial healing," KNBC reported.

A leadership vote is scheduled for Tuesday, as Councilmembers Paul Krekorian and Curren Price both expressed interest in taking over as president. Krekorian tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, but will attend virtually.

The Los Angeles Times first reported last week about the audio recording of a conversation that happened in October 2021 between Martinez, Cedillo, de León and Herrera while discussing the redrawing of districts.

According to the Times, Martinez criticized another colleague, Councilor Mike Bonin, who is White, over the parenting of his Black son, who she said Bonin treated like an "accessory."

"They're raising him like a little White kid," Martinez said, according to the recording leaked on Reddit. "I was like, 'This kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner, and then I'll bring him back."'

Martinez also called Bonin's son "ese changuito," Spanish for "that little monkey."

De León chimed in, comparing Bonin’s handling of the toddler to "when Nury brings her little yard bag or the Louis Vuitton bag." "Su negrito, like on the side," Martinez added.

It’s not clear who made or leaked the recording.

"Mike Bonin won't f---ing ever say peep about Latinos. He'll never say a f---ing word about us," De León said.

Martinez also derided Los Angeles County District George Gascón, saying "He's with the Blacks."

Hundreds of members of the indigenous community protested on Saturday for De León and Cedillo to resign.

Martinez is heard in the recording referring to Oaxacans as "little, short dark people.''

Despite apologies from all four who participated in the conversation, de León and Cedillo have not conceded to numerous calls from political leaders for their departure, including from President Biden.

17-Year-Old High School Student Dies Suddenly After Collapsing During Choir Rehearsal

On Friday, authorities announced that a 17-year-old student at Naperville North High School had died suddenly during a choir rehearsal.

17-year-old Daniel Moshi of Franklin Park, died suddenly after he collapsed while he was practicing on stage on Friday evening.

“Naperville fire officials confirmed they responded to the high school around 6:18 p.m. for an “unconscious” 17-year-old boy. When fire officials arrived, bystanders were performing CPR on the teen, who was taken to Edwards Medical Center, where he died,” NBC reported.

“Naperville North was hosting the All State Honors Show Choir for the Illinois American Choral Directors Association over the weekend, where Moshi was performing,” the outlet added.

The DuPage County coroner’s office has stated that an investigation into the death is ongoing, but no cause of death has been determined at this time.

“We sadly want to announce of suddenly passing of one of our wonderful young boys Daniel Loden Moshi, son of Loden and Caroline Moshi, and Grandson of my late brother-in-law Belis and late Elen Moshi Shlaimon,” Sarhadoon Ibrahim wrote on Facebook.

“He was a choir member and singing to Lord he will be missed from all who have chance to know him he was humble, active and loved by all. Daniel you will be missed from all family members and friends.”

When asked what the cause of his death was, Sarhadoon claimed that a heart attack was likely a possibility.

“[He] suddenly collapsed while he was practicing on stage – until now no real reason – just like a heart attack,” Sarhadoon said.

One user commented, “so sorry to hear that and I hope he did not had that vaccine because Some doctors believe vaccine is the reason for heart attack.”

After Moshi died, a lot of people wanted to pay their respects.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear son Daniel Moshi, Saint Andrews choir alto lead singer. For a community of believers to lose a faithful member is difficult and a test of faith; for believing parents to lose a faithful child is beyond comprehension and stretches our limited senses of understanding. Daniel may not be with us on earth any more and no “word” can totally ease the pain of the loss, but the loss of Daniel on earth is assured to us to be singing to the the “Word” in Paradise,” Saint Andrews Assyrian Church wrote on Facebook.

“Last night we lost one of the best members of our church’s youth Daniel Moshi. It’s very hard losing such a smart educated polite young person. Daniel had an angelic voice and I enjoyed every time hearing him while he was performing at St. Andrew’s Church. The heaven gained an angel today. You will be missed dearly. My deepest condolences to his parents Carolyn & Loden Moshi.Keep singing with angels Dany! Rest in heaven,” Hani KhiziranRealtor said.

“My dear friend Karolin Moshi and her family are in need of prayers over the devastating and unexpected passing of her sweet son, Daniel. The community is heart broken over the news that put us all into shock. May Daniel rest in paradise as he will be missed by many,” Karo Mikhail wrote.
