The Associated Press projects that Rep. Mayra Flores, the first Mexico-born congresswoman, has been unseated by her Democratic opponent, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, concluding a short tenure in the House that follows a high-profile special election victory in June. 

"The RED WAVE did not happen. Republicans and Independents stayed home. DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE RESULTS IF YOU DID NOT DO YOUR PART!" Flores, R-Texas, tweeted Tuesday night. 

Despite Flores' win earlier this year, the newly-elected congresswoman was in for an uphill battle to hold onto her seat since day one, as her district was redrawn to include greater swaths of Democrat-voting San Antonio. 

In Flores' special election race, the congresswoman ran under previous district lines where Biden won by +4 percentage points in 2020, however under new district lines, the +16 Biden district is far more friendly to Democrats than before.

Gonzalez, a three-term congressman, serves Texas’ 15th congressional district, but he opted to run in the newly redrawn 34th congressional district where his home and much of his urban San Antonio base are now located.

Gonzalez considers himself a moderate Democrat, at times disagreeing with his party's stances on domestic energy policy and border security. 

In October, the Gonzalez campaign came under scrutiny for using a doctored photo of Flores to make her appear more menacing while holding a firearm.

Flores campaigned heavily on her Christian faith, border security and economic issues, leaning into her story as the wife of a U.S. Border Control agent and Mexico-born immigrant.

Flores' special election victory sent shock waves through the political world in June when she flipped her district red for the first time in 150 years, sparking national discourse over the growing trend of Hispanic voters towards the Republican Party.

J.D. Vance wins Ohio’s Senate seat.

Tuesday’s highly anticipated results between J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Representative Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) came after the GOP campaigned in several battleground states to ensure Republicans take back the majority, and Ohio was in the spotlight.

Vance and Ryan have gone head-to-head for months.

The Trump endorsed Republican served in the Iraq War as a Marine and received a law degree from Yale Law School. He also is a bestselling author after writing ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ which was later turned into a Netflix film.

Vance said he witnessed an economic downturn in his hometown in Middletown, Ohio as jobs and families slowly disappeared.

“The U.S. Senate needs someone who knows what it’s like to live in a left-behind community, not a career politician who has done nothing for the people of Ohio,” Vance said.

His campaign focused on the America First policy, the border crisis, combatting the drug and opioid epidemic, and ending abortion, among other top issues.

Meanwhile Vance’s Democrat opponent, Tim Ryan, has spent his career fighting for the states’ workers.

Ryan was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2002 and has since been reelected nine times. He also served in the Ohio State Senate.

The Democrat has remained focused on the quality of life and economy in his home state and has also worked across the aisle to combat the nations opioid crisis.

In the Senate, the lifelong Ohioan sought to fight raise wages, make healthcare more affordable, rebuild public infrastructure and invest in education.
