Florida Medical Boards Vote To Ban Medical Transition For Minors

A Florida rule passed Friday that prohibits minors from receiving puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender-related surgeries.

On October 28, Florida’s Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine held a legislative meeting that proposed the rule to ban medical transition treatments for those under the age of 18 after hearing from expert testimony and public comment. On November 4, a second meeting was held where the committee voted on the rule, which passed, and is currently set to take effect after a 21-day public comment period.

“The chief point of agreement among all of the experts — and I must emphasize this — is that there is a pressing need for additional, high-quality clinical research,” said Dr. David A. Diamond, a radiation oncologist and the chair of the board.

Florida now joins the medical authorities of several European countries including Norway, Finland, Sweden, and the U.K. in concluding that the evidence of so-called “gender affirming” care, which includes puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries, is very poor and the risks are real. Once the rule goes into effect, it will be the first ban in the country of “gender-affirming” care for minors instituted by a state medical board.

The committee cited the poor quality of evidence to support the use of “gender-affirming” medical interventions in minors, suggesting instead that psychotherapy would be a more appropriate treatment for adolescents who have recently adopted a trans-identity.

The board voted 6-3 to adopt a new standard of care that will prohibit doctors from prescribing puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or performing gender-related surgeries until patients are 18. Doctors who disobey the new rule risk losing their medical licenses.

The rule includes a grandfather clause that permits individuals already receiving these treatments to continue. For new patients, the Board of Osteopathic Medicine voted to allow exceptional cases if they participated in an Institutional Review Board-approved clinical trial. However, the Board of Medicine voted against the exception.

Key U.S. Senate Race Moved From From ‘Leans Democrat’ To ‘Toss Up’ After Ron DeSantis Endorses Candidate: Report

RealClearPolitics has shifted their projections for a key U.S. Senate race ahead of next week’s midterm elections after the candidate has seen a boost in the polls following an endorsement from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R).

The updated prediction from RealClearPolitics in U.S. Senate race in Colorado has moved the race between Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Republican challenger Joe O’Dea from “leans Democrat” to “toss up,” Fox News reported.

“Voters are angry and they know who caused the problem — they’re fed up and eager for change,” Joshua Marin-Mora, deputy press secretary for the O’Dea campaign, posted on Twitter in response to the news on Friday.

“When you’re talking about the issues that affect working Coloradans, that’s what’s moving the needle,” O’Dea told Fox News Digital in a statement. “We’re talking about record inflation, record crime, and diesel that’s over $5 a gallon. That’s what matters to working Americans, and that’s why we’re going to win on Tuesday.”

Polls have moved more in favor of Republicans retaking control of the U.S. Senate in recent days in addition to them being expected to blow out Democrats in House races next week.

The surge in support for O’Dea, which could be a key race that helps take away power from Democrats in the Senate, comes after DeSantis endorsed him late last month.

“Hello this is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis,” the Florida governor said in a robocall. “America needs strong leadership and desperately. That’s why I’m endorsing Joe O’Dea for U.S. Senate. Colorado, please vote for Joe O’Dea.”

“I’ve watched Joe from a distance, and I’m impressed,” DeSantis continued.

Former President Donald Trump has refused to support O’Dea and has attacked DeSantis for boosting him in an attempt to help Republicans reclaim control of the Senate.

“A BIG MISTAKE!” Trump responded on social media.

DeSantis made appearances with Turning Point Action in August and September to campaign for U.S. Senate candidates JD Vance, of Ohio; Ron Johnson, of Wisconsin; Blake Masters, of Arizona; and Adam Laxalt, of Nevada.

DeSantis has been equally busy backing current and potential fellow Republican governors, campaigning for Tim Michels, of Wisconsin; Derek Schmitt, of Kansas; Mark Ronchetti, of New Mexico; Doug Mastriano, of Pennsylvania; Kari Lake, of Arizona; and current Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt.
