Pelosi Compares Dems’ Election Against Trump To America’s War For Independence

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told MSNBC on Thursday that the Democrats’ election battle against Donald Trump in November is comparable to the U.S. warring with England for its independence.

Pelosi was interviewed by MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell as the Democratic National Convention begins its fourth and final day in Chicago. Many of the DNC speakers have focused on attacking Trump as a “threat to democracy,” and Pelosi repeated that rhetoric during her Thursday morning interview.

“We have to defeat a person who is a threat to our democracy of the kind that we have not seen,” Pelosi said. “At the beginning of our country, Thomas Paine said ‘The times have found us — declare war, establish a new nation.’ Abraham Lincoln took up that charge to keep our country together years later, decades later.”

“And now the times have found us to save our democracy,” she added. “That is what we are here to do.”

The Trump campaign responded to Pelosi’s comments, calling them “unhinged.”

“Democrats are now outright alluding to political violence if President Trump wins,” the Trump campaign wrote on X.

Pelosi quoted Thomas Paine’s line, “The times have found us,” in reference to Trump five years ago. In 2019, Pelosi shared a photo of herself standing up and pointing at Trump during a White House meeting between Democratic leadership and the Trump administration.

“In the darkest hours of the American Revolution, Thomas Paine wrote: ‘The times have found us.’ The times have found us today to fight for our democracy,” Pelosi said at the time. “We owe it to our children; we owe it to the generations of Americans who have fought and died to defend this country.”

Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept her party’s nomination and address Democrats Thursday night to wrap up the convention. Pelosi reportedly played a crucial role in pushing for President Joe Biden to end his 2024 campaign and usher in Harris as the new nominee.

“Sometimes you have to take a punch for the children. I did what I had to do,” she said earlier this week when asked about Biden’s exit from the race and her relationship with him. “My concern was not about the president, it was about his campaign.”

‘Muslim Women For Harris/Walz’ Disbands Over DNC Snub

“Muslim Women for Harris/Walz” is no more. The group has announced its dissolution after the Democratic National Convention hosted the parents of an Israeli held hostage by Hamas terrorists but declined to also feature a Palestinian speaker.

Journalist Yashar Ali shared a statement from the group in an X post on Thursday — just ahead of the DNC’s final evening, when Harris is expected to formally accept the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nomination.

“We cannot in good conscience, continue Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, in light of this new information from the Uncommitted movement, that VP Harris’ team declined their request to have a Palestinian American speaker take the stage at the DNC,” the statement read.

“The family of the Israeli Hostage that was on the stage tonight, has shown more empathy towards Palestinian Americans and Palestinians, than our candidate or the DNC has. This is a terrible message to send to Democrats. Palestinians have the right to speak about Palestine. We pray that the DNC and VP Harris team makes the right decision before this convention is over. For the sake of each of us,” it concluded.

Wednesday evening opened with an emotional speech from Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg, the parents of Israeli-American Hamas hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin, which led to chants of “Bring them home!” from the crowd.

Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote for Vanity Fair that he believed the Democratic Party was missing the mark by not including a Palestinian speaker — particularly because the DNC’s host city of Chicago is home to “more Palestinian-Americans than anywhere else in the country.”

“But you would not know this looking at that stage,” he wrote. “Despite the appeals of Palestinian American delegates and activists, no Palestinian American is scheduled to address the convention from the main stage. I suspect this is because of what such a speaker might feel compelled to say.”

He went on to cite casualty numbers pushed by the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry, claiming — as Hamas has — that Israel had indiscriminately slaughtered civilians and even children.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who spoke on the DNC stage herself earlier in the week, voiced her agreement that the party should include a Palestinian speaker: “Just as we must honor the humanity of hostages, so too must we center the humanity of the 40,000 Palestinians killed under Israeli bombardment. To deny that story is to participate in the dehumanization of Palestinians. The @DNC must change course and affirm our shared humanity.”

Palestinian Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) also chastised the DNC directly, claiming that allowing the parents of Israeli hostages to speak without giving equal time to Palestinians sent a message that Israeli lives were worth more.

“Why are you saying that Israeli children are more valuable than Palestinian children? Where is our shared humanity? Stop erasing Palestinians. We exist. We deserve to be heard,” she complained.
