Former U.S. Attorney General Barr: Conviction In Trump Case Likely To Be ‘Overturned,’ ‘There Was No Crime’

Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr said this week that he believes the conviction in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office’s criminal case against former President Donald Trump is likely to be “overturned” because there was “no crime” committed.

“I said from the very start that this was an abomination,” Barr said during an interview. “And I actually was surprised that they went ahead with the case because there really was nothing there. There was no crime there and they never were able to really articulate it until after the defense rested its case. So I thought the whole thing was a travesty. I wasn’t surprised by the verdict because the way the case was conducted, there was never really any discipline on trying to make the prosecutor establish what the elements of the crime were and what evidence he had to do it. It was just assumed from the beginning that there was some kind of Federal Election Campaign violation, which there wasn’t.”

Barr warned that the case was damaging to political discourse in the U.S. and to the general health of the country.

“This case is going to be overruled because there are just multiple errors and violations of constitutional rights,” he said. “This will be eventually overruled after the election. But what happens if there’s a close election and Biden squeaks through and then the case is overruled? Half the country is going to feel that this was a stolen election. And, you know, again, this is a grave injustice and disservice to the country.”

He said that the gag order that the judge imposed on Trump should be lifted immediately and that Trump has every right to attack those who testified against him, the judge, the prosecution, and the case.

Trump Campaign Requests Documents From Some VP Contenders: Report

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has reportedly requested documents from several individuals who he is considering to be his vice presidential running mate.

Among those who have so far received requests are North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), and former cabinet member Ben Carson.

Those listed may not be the only ones who have contacted thus far as ABC News reported that “others are likely to be considered for the No. 2 job.” The Associated Press reported that the list is “fluid and evolving,” meaning that it will likely change as Trump sees fit.

A Trump campaign spokesperson said that “anyone claiming to know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying, unless the person is named Donald J. Trump.”

Polling last month from an I&I/TIPP Poll indicated that 15% of Republican voters choose Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as their first choice for VP, while 14% choose him as their second choice for VP — both numbers were the highest of all the candidates listed.

Out of the candidates who were listed by the Associated Press, Carson had the highest ranking for first choice in the poll at 5%, followed by Scott at 4%, Rubio at 2%, and the remaining contenders at 1% or less.

Another name that has generated headlines in recent weeks and might be moving up Trump’s board for contenders is Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), especially after his passionate defense of Trump during a Sunday interview on NBC News.

When asked during the interview if he would accept the job offer, Cotton responded: “Any great patriot, if offered a chance to serve our country by the president, would have to consider it seriously. But what I’m focused on, like the president, is making sure that we win this election in November, and I want to help him govern successfully to restore the peace and prosperity that he brought to America for four years that Joe Biden has destroyed.”
